Our Lady of Rosary feast is celebrated on the 7th of October. St. Pius V established this feast in 1573.The purpose was to thank God for the victory of Christians over the Turks at Lepanto – a victory attributed to the praying of the Rosary. Clement XI extended the feast to the Universal Church in 1716.
The devotion to Our Lady is manifested through the pious recitation of the Rosary (the word comes from Latin Rosarium meaning ‘Rose Garden’ or ‘Garland of Roses’). We participate in the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose focus is Christ Jesus. Through Mary, we reach Jesus, by honoring Mary, we adore her son Jesus.
The devotion of Rosary is attributed to St. Dominic. In 1206, St. Dominic had been vigorously preaching and writing against the Albigensian heresy. He pleaded invoking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary to give him success. Our Lady appeared to him and gave the Rosary as a mighty weapon and taught him of its use and efficacy. By popular tradition, it is believed that Our Lady has made 15 specific promises to those who recite the Rosary prayer with great devotion.
In 1917, Our Lady appeared to the three children at Fatima in Portugal and asked that the Fatima prayer to be added to Rosary and also told the visionaries to recite the Rosary to stop the First World War and as a part of the Immaculate Heart’s reparation. The Lady at Fatima revealed her name as “Our Lady of Rosary”.
The Rosary is a perfect form of prayerful tribute to the Holy Trinity.
